If you’ve missed the quirky cool aesthetic of Vena Cava and Shipley & Halmos, you are not alone (some team members at Spring still feel the loss deeply). But luckily for all of us, Lisa Mayock of Vena Cava and Jeff Halmos of Shipley & Halmos are not only married, but they’ve decided to team up as design partners on a new line, Monogram, that’s every bit as cool as you want it to be. We caught up with them recently to get the inside scoop on the line.

Q: How did you decide to start the line?
LISA: I’ve been collecting and wearing vintage t-shirts for about as long as I can remember. About a year ago, I told Jeff it was really difficult to find new graphic t-shirts that captured the same spirit as some of the my vintage favorites. We started talking, and next thing we knew we were working on graphic strike-offs with our screen printer in LA!
Q: How did you go about designing/picking the graphics?
JEFF: We have so much fun making the graphics! It allows us to blend all of our influences together – typography, poster art, graphic design, fashion, etc etc – to create something new. The inspiration comes from all over the place. We keep a long running list of ideas that we both contribute to. Then when it comes time to make new art, we circle back and see what sticks.
Q: How do you envision the t-shirts being worn?
LISA: That’s a great question. On our site, we deliberately stayed away from jeans when styling the looks. We did this to help show people how to wear graphic t-shirts in ways they might not have thought of before. I personally love to wear them with a great high waisted pant, a vintage belt, and silver jewelry. It’s pretty much my uniform these days.
